DIY natural cosmetics: lip balm and body butter

Three ingredients and you have your own care. Why water-free recipes are the easiest and what to watch on shelf life.

The short version

The easiest products are water-free ones from oil, plant butter and a little wax, like lip balm and body butter. They need no preservative. As soon as water comes in (a classic cream), you need clean containers and a preservative, or it spoils fast.

Stirring your own care is surprisingly easy once you start with the right recipe. The base is nourishing oils and plant butters like shea butter, plus a little wax for firmness. You know exactly what is in it and can tune the care to your skin.

One point decides between success and frustration: water. Settle that up front and the recipes work reliably.

The water rule of DIY cosmetics

Water-free products (oil, butter, wax) are uncomplicated and keep for a long time. But as soon as water or watery ingredients like hydrosols are added, the product becomes a breeding ground for germs. Then you need sterile containers, clean work and a suitable preservative, and even then the shelf life is limited. For a start, stick to water-free recipes.

Recipe 1 · very easy

Nourishing lip balm

You need

  • 1 part beeswax (or candelilla wax, vegan)
  • 2 parts shea butter
  • 2 parts care oil (e.g. almond or jojoba)
  • small tins or lip-balm tubes

How to

Melt wax, butter and oil in a water bath, stir briefly and pour quickly into the tins. Let it set, done. Too hard? A little more oil next time. Too soft? A little more wax.

Recipe 2 · whipped

Whipped body butter

You need

  • 3 parts shea butter
  • 1 part liquid care oil
  • optionally a few drops of essential oil

How to

Gently soften the shea butter (not fully liquid), mix with the oil and chill until it firms up again. Then whip with a mixer until a fluffy butter forms. Fill into a jar. Being water-free, it keeps for several months.

The raw materials to start

With a small basic kit you can make both recipes. What to look for:

  • Unrefined shea butter, richer in nutrients than refined
  • A mild care oil like almond or jojoba
  • Clean tins or jars, rinsed with hot water beforehand

Frequently asked

Why do some homemade creams need a preservative?
As soon as water is present, germs can multiply. Water-based creams therefore need clean containers and a preservative. Water-free products like balm and body butter are uncomplicated and need none.
How long does homemade natural cosmetics keep?
Water-free products often several months, provided you work cleanly and store cool. Water-based creams keep much shorter, even with a preservative.
Is this suitable for sensitive skin?
Especially then, because you know every ingredient. Use essential oils very sparingly or not at all, and test new recipes on a small patch first.
