Clean your washing machine: beat smell, mould and limescale

Does the laundry or the machine smell musty? Get it fresh again in 30 minutes, with home remedies, no pricey gimmicks.

The short version

Three spots cause almost every odour: the rubber seal, the detergent drawer and the lint filter. Add a hot cycle at 60 to 90 degrees with descaler or citric acid, and it is fresh again.

Modern machines wash cold and economically, but that lets a biofilm of grease, detergent residue and bacteria build up over time. It smells musty and transfers to the laundry. The good news: you do not need expensive tabs, just a little method.

Fresh in 5 steps

1

Wipe the rubber seal

Pull the folds of the door gasket outward and wipe with a cloth and a little vinegar cleaner or soda water. Most mould sits here.

2

Clean the detergent drawer

Take out the drawer, soak it in warm water, loosen deposits with an old toothbrush, do not forget the recess.

3

Empty the lint filter

Open the flap at the bottom, have a flat dish ready, unscrew the filter and remove lint, coins and sludge.

4

Hot cycle with descaler

Run the empty machine at 60 to 90 degrees with citric acid or a machine cleaner. That dissolves limescale and biofilm in the drum and hoses.

5

Keep it dry

Leave the door and drawer open after washing so everything dries. The best protection against new odour.

Against recurring musty smell

If you wash cold a lot, give the machine a hot cycle once a month. And dose detergent sparingly, overdosing feeds the biofilm.

Frequently asked

How often should I clean the washing machine?
Wipe the seal and drawer briefly each month, run a hot cycle every four to six weeks, clean the lint filter once or twice a year.
Vinegar or citric acid, which is better?
Citric acid is low-odour and kinder to rubber than vinegar. Vinegar works fast but, because of the seals, should not be used too hot or permanently.
Does a hygiene rinse help against the smell?
It reduces bacteria in cold washing but does not replace cleaning the seal, drawer and drum. Clean first, then prevent.
