The short version
First look at the care label: „W” means clean water-based, „S” solvent only, „SW” both, „X” vacuum only. That decides whether an upholstery cleaner, foam or just the brush comes into play.
A sofa is an investment, and the right product decides whether it gets clean or gets a ring. Fabric, microfibre, real and faux leather all want different treatment. With a few rules it works without damage.
How the sofa gets fresh again
Check the label & vacuum
Find the cleaning code on the upholstery, then vacuum thoroughly, including the crevices, that removes crumbs and loose dirt.
Test the spot
Test every product on a hidden spot first to see if the colour holds. Only then work over larger areas.
Fabric: upholstery foam
For „W" or „SW" apply upholstery cleaner or foam, let it act, loosen with a soft brush and wipe off with a cloth.
Leather: mild & care
Wipe real leather only with a slightly damp cloth and a little leather cleaner, then keep it supple with leather care. No wetness.
Let it dry
Let it dry thoroughly, open a window. Only use it again when everything is dry, that prevents rings and odours.
Against odours
Sprinkle baking soda generously on the dry upholstery, let it act for a few hours and vacuum thoroughly, that binds odours. For pet hair a lint roller or pet-hair remover helps beforehand.
What helps
What to look for:
- An upholstery cleaner or foam for fabric
- Leather cleaner and leather care for real leather
- Baking soda to refresh against odours
