The short version
Three stages: vacuum thoroughly, treat stains specifically and occasionally deep-clean with carpet foam or a wet vacuum. Always work from the outside in and never too wet.
A carpet collects dust, skin flakes and dirt deep in the fibres. Regular vacuuming keeps it fresh, and for stains and the big spring clean there are simple methods that protect it and fluff it back up.
How the carpet gets clean
Vacuum thoroughly
Vacuum slowly and in several directions, that lifts even deep-seated dust, ideally regularly.
Treat the stain at once
Dab fresh stains, do not rub. Work from the outside in so the stain does not spread.
Carpet foam or powder
For refreshing, work in dry powder and vacuum, or apply carpet foam, let it act and vacuum.
Deep cleaning
Wet-clean heavily soiled carpets with a wet vacuum or carpet cleaner, then let them dry thoroughly.
Fluff & air
After drying, raise the fibres with a brush or the vacuum, airing adds extra freshness.
Never too wet
Too much water gets into the backing and can cause mould and rings. Better work slightly damp, vacuum well and let it dry completely, ideally with a draught.
What helps
