Clean car wheels & rims , brake dust off

Crusted wheels, brown brake dust? How to bring alloy and steel wheels back to a shine , acid-free and gentle.

The short version

The key is an acid-free wheel cleaner: spray on, let it act (it turns red, that is the dissolved iron fallout), work over with the wheel brush, rinse off. Never on hot wheels or in the sun.

Brake dust is aggressive: fine metal abrasion that eats into the wheel if it stays too long. Regular cleaning protects the wheel and keeps it looking good. With the right product this is gentle, without attacking the coating.

How the wheels shine again

1

Let the wheels cool

Never work on hot wheels, the product dries on instantly and can leave stains. Work in the shade.

2

Rinse off loose dirt

Rinse loose dirt with water, that saves product and prevents scratches when brushing.

3

Spray on acid-free cleaner

Apply acid-free wheel cleaner generously and let it act briefly. The red colour shows the fallout being dissolved.

4

Work over with the wheel brush

Use a soft wheel brush into the spokes and the rim well, that loosens stubborn brake dust.

5

Rinse & dry

Rinse thoroughly with clear water and dry, so no water spots remain.

Sealing saves work

A wheel sealant after cleaning makes brake dust stick less, the next wash is easier. Use acid-based cleaners only in exceptional cases and never on sensitive or polished wheels.

Frequently asked

Why does the wheel cleaner turn red?
A normal reaction: the cleaner binds the iron-rich brake dust and turns red. It shows it is working.
Acid-based or acid-free?
Acid-free is the gentle choice for regular care and all wheels. Acid-based cleaners are more aggressive and can attack coatings, only in an emergency.
How often should I clean the wheels?
About every two to four weeks, depending on mileage. The sooner the brake dust is off, the less it eats into the wheel.
