The short version
Rattan likes soft brushes and soapy water, no scouring agents and no pressure washer. Reach the gaps in the weave with a small brush or old toothbrush. Let it dry well afterwards.
Rattan is low-maintenance and weatherproof, but dust, pollen and green film collect in the fine gaps of the weave. With the right gentle cleaning the material stays beautiful for a long time, without the fibres tearing or dulling.
Clean rattan right
Vacuum or sweep
Vacuum loose dirt and dust out of the weave or sweep it off with a soft brush.
Mix soapy water
Mix lukewarm water with a little mild soap or all-purpose cleaner, no scouring agents.
Clean with a soft brush
Wipe the weave with a soft brush, working in the direction of the weave structure.
Gaps with a small brush
Get into the narrow gaps with a small brush or old toothbrush, that is where the green film sits.
Rinse & dry
Rinse with clear water and let it dry well, ideally in the air, before cushions go back on.
No pressure, no sun
The pressure washer is too strong, it can tear up the plastic fibres and loosen the weave. Also avoid direct sun while cleaning, otherwise the soap dries on streaky. For stubborn green film a moss and algae remover helps, diluted and rinsed well.
What helps
What to look for:
- A soft brush and a small brush for the gaps
- Mild all-purpose cleaner or soap
- A moss and algae remover for green film
