The short version
Limescale stains and scale are acid-soluble: let citric acid or vinegar cleaner act, then work over with the brush or a pumice stone. For stubborn cases an acidic toilet power cleaner helps.
Limescale stains form when scale from the water combines with urine residue and hardens. It often sits under the rim and at the water line. With acid it dissolves, sometimes it takes several rounds, that is normal.
How the toilet gets clean again
Lower the water
Briefly pump the water out of the bowl with the brush so the acid acts directly on the deposit.
Apply acid
Put citric-acid solution or vinegar cleaner on the rings, under the rim cover with acid-soaked cloth or paper.
Let it act
Leave it for several hours, ideally overnight, so the deposit dissolves.
Work over
Scrub with the toilet brush, carefully rub stubborn spots with a pumice stone (ceramic only, not acrylic).
Flush & repeat
Flush thoroughly. For thick layers repeat the process, then even old scale breaks down.
Pumice on ceramic only
A toilet pumice stone removes hard layers, but only on ceramic. On acrylic, enamel or coloured surfaces it can scratch. When in doubt test on an inconspicuous spot first.
What helps
What to look for:
- Citric acid or an acidic toilet power cleaner
- A toilet pumice stone for hard layers
- Gloves, acid irritates the skin
