The short version
Curd soap is pure soap without superfatting or additives. That makes it a household all-rounder: pre-treating stains, laundry, a base for your own cleaners. For exactly that reason it is not for daily skin care, where natural soaps are the better choice.
Few products are as cheap and as versatile as a plain bar of curd soap. While natural soap scores on care, curd soap is the diligent worker: it tackles stains, laundry and coarse dirt, and forms the base for many homemade cleaners.
The reason lies in how it is made. Let us look at what sets curd soap apart from a nourishing soap, then it is clear where it shines.
What makes curd soap special
During saponification, oil reacts with a lye to form soap. In care soaps some oil is deliberately left over, the superfatting that nourishes the skin. Curd soap, by contrast, is almost fully saponified and contains neither superfatting nor fragrance or dye. It therefore cleans strongly and neutrally instead of leaving a caring film. In the household that is an advantage, on the skin a drawback.
Where it shines
Pre-treating stains
Dampen the stain, rub in curd soap, leave briefly, wash as usual. Works on collar grime, grass and much more.
Laundry base
Grated, with washing soda and water, it becomes a simple liquid detergent. Gentle on textiles.
All-purpose cleaner
A little dissolved in hot water makes a gentle cleaner for floors and surfaces. More ideas in the soap guide.
Coarse & outdoors
For very dirty hands, tools or garden gear. Strong, cheap, indestructible.

Recipe · simple
Liquid soap from curd soap
You need
- 1 tbsp grated curd soap
- 500 ml hot water
- optional 1 tsp washing soda for more grease-cutting power
How to
Dissolve the grated soap in hot water, stir well, let it cool. Pour into a pump bottle and shake before use. Too thick? Thin with a little warm water. Important: do not mix with acid.
Not for daily skin care
Because curd soap is not superfatted, daily use dries the skin out. Occasional hand washing is fine, but for regular care reach for a mild natural soap such as Aleppo soap.
Spotting good curd soap
When buying, simplicity is what counts. What to look for:
- A short ingredient list, without fragrance and dye
- Plant-based rather than animal tallow, if that matters to you
- Cheaper in a multipack, and it keeps practically forever
