Descale your kettle & coffee machine

White flakes in the water, a longer brewing time? How to descale your kettle and coffee machine properly, and how often.

The short version

Limescale is acid-soluble: citric acid (low-odour, gentle on materials) or diluted vinegar dissolve it reliably. What matters is the right dose, not boiling it, and rinsing thoroughly.

Limescale settles on heating elements, costs energy and lengthens the brewing time, and eventually white flakes float in the kettle. Regular descaling keeps appliances fast, efficient and long-lasting. How often depends on your water hardness.

Descale it right

1

Make the solution

Dissolve citric-acid powder in warm (not boiling) water, or mix vinegar roughly 1:1 with water.

2

Let it act

Fill it in and let it work for 20 to 60 minutes depending on the scaling, in the kettle warm it briefly, do not boil.

3

Run it through

For the coffee machine, run the solution through once or twice, then empty the tank.

4

Rinse thoroughly

Rinse or run through with clear water two to three times, until no taste remains.

5

Set an interval

With hard water every two to four weeks, with soft water less often. A water filter extends the intervals.

Mind the material

For appliances with aluminium, rubber seals or sensitive parts, rather use citric acid and follow the maker notes. Vinegar can attack seals over time.

Recommendation

What helps

What to look for:

  • A universal descaler based on citric acid
  • Clear water for thorough rinsing
  • With hard water, a water filter

Frequently asked

How often should I descale?
With hard water every two to four weeks, with soft water less often. Rule of thumb: as soon as the brewing time rises or flakes appear.
Citric acid or vinegar?
Citric acid is low-odour and gentler on materials. Vinegar works fast but can attack seals and smells strong.
Does limescale harm the appliance?
Limescale insulates the heating element, which costs energy and shortens the lifespan. Regular descaling prevents it.
