Plastic-free bathroom with bar soap and bamboo

A plastic-free bathroom: the first steps

Plastic-free does not mean going without, it means swapping cleverly. Seven simple steps, one at a time.

The short version

You do not have to switch everything at once. Replace each item with the plastic-free version when it runs out. Start with the big levers: bar soap and solid shampoo replace most of the bottles, the rest follows step by step.

The bathroom is the room with the most single-use bottles in the house: shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, soap, cleaner. That makes it the most rewarding place to begin. Every bottle you replace for good saves a real amount of material over the years.

The trick is to make it easy on yourself. Do not throw everything out, just replace each item once it is used up. That way the switch never hurts and it sticks.

Seven steps, one at a time

1

Bar soap

Swap the liquid soap in the dispenser for a good bar, for example a mild Aleppo soap. The easiest first step.

2

Solid shampoo

One bar replaces several bottles. Which one suits your hair is in the shampoo guide.

3

Solid shower bar

Like soap, but tuned mild for showering. Economical and travel-friendly, with no plastic bottle.

4

Safety razor

Instead of disposable razors, a classic safety razor with replaceable blades. Lasts a lifetime, plus a nourishing shaving soap.

5

Dental care

Toothpaste tablets and a bamboo brush save the tube and the plastic. Light and travel-friendly.

6

Natural deodorant

Deodorant cream or stick in glass or paper instead of a plastic roller. Look for aluminium-free formulas.

7

Refill instead of single-use

Whatever stays liquid, refill at an unpackaged shop or with a refill pack instead of buying new each time.

Why the switch is worth it

  • Less packaging waste, and often less microplastic in the waste water.
  • Solid products are economical and therefore often cheaper over time.
  • Small and light, perfect for travel with no risk of leaks.
  • Usually shorter, clearer ingredient lists than many liquid products.
Recommendation

Start gently with a set

If you want to begin all at once, a small starter set is the easiest way. What to look for:

  • Bar soap and solid shampoo as the base
  • Accessories like a soap dish or sisal pouch so everything dries well
  • Naturally pure products with a short ingredient list

Frequently asked

Where should I start?
With the big levers: bar soap and solid shampoo replace most of the bottles in the bathroom. Then shaving, dental care and deodorant follow one by one.
Is plastic-free more expensive?
At first glance sometimes, over time often not. Solid products are very economical and last longer than their liquid counterparts, which usually evens out the price.
Do solid products last as long?
Stored correctly, often longer. The key is that soap and bars dry out between uses, ideally on a draining dish or in a sisal pouch.
Do I have to switch everything at once?
No, quite the opposite. Replace each product only once it is empty. That avoids waste and makes the switch feel effortless.
