Natural deodorant without aluminium: what really stops odour

A deodorant should prevent odour, not sweating. How natural deodorants manage that and how the switch succeeds.

The short version

Sweat itself does not smell, only bacteria turn it into odour. Natural deodorants target exactly those bacteria, usually with baking soda, zinc or magnesium, instead of sealing the sweat glands with aluminium salts like antiperspirants. So you keep sweating but do not smell.

Sweating is healthy: it cools the body and belongs there. What bothers many is not the sweat but the odour. That is exactly where a good natural deodorant comes in. It lets you sweat but ensures the odour-forming bacteria stand no chance.

Switching from a classic antiperspirant almost always works once you know what happens and what to watch for.

What is in a natural deodorant

Baking soda

Shifts the skin pH slightly to the alkaline, where odour bacteria struggle. Very effective, but can irritate sensitive skin.

Zinc & magnesium

Bind odour gently without shifting the pH much. The milder choice for sensitive armpits, often as a baking-soda-free version.

Plant oils & starch

Shea butter and coconut oil nourish, starch absorbs moisture. Together they make a pleasant deodorant cream.

Applying natural deodorant
Best applied to clean, dry skin, ideally straight after showering.

How the switch succeeds

  • Apply to clean, dry skin, ideally straight after showering.
  • Dose sparingly, a pea-sized amount often covers both armpits.
  • If baking soda irritates your skin, switch to a baking-soda-free version with zinc.
  • After shaving, wait a moment, freshly shaved skin reacts more sensitively.
  • A little patience in the first days, the skin adjusts to the change.
Recommendation

Choosing a good natural deodorant

Whether cream in a jar or stick, both work. What to look for:

  • Without aluminium salts, with baking soda, zinc or magnesium instead
  • A baking-soda-free formula for sensitive skin
  • Packaging in glass or paper instead of plastic

Frequently asked

Does natural deodorant stop sweating?
No, and that is intended. Natural deodorants prevent the odour but let the body keep sweating. Blocking sweat is the job of antiperspirants with aluminium salts.
Why does my natural deodorant irritate my skin?
Usually it is the baking soda, which shifts the skin pH. Sensitive skin does better with a baking-soda-free version based on zinc. Freshly shaved skin also reacts more sensitively.
How long does the switch take?
Often just a few days. The skin adjusts to the new product. If irritation persists, switching the formula is worth it.
