Solid shower bar: showering without a plastic bottle

A small bar replaces the big bottle. How a shower bar differs from soap and what to look for.

The short version

A solid shower bar is a bar tuned to the skin, milder than classic soap and often set to the skin-neutral pH. It is economical, travel-friendly and plastic-free. If you prefer it purely natural, take a mild natural soap, more in the soap guide.

After solid shampoo, the solid shower bar is the second big step to a plastic-free bathroom. A bar lasts surprisingly long, weighs almost nothing and passes any security check. And unlike a wet bar of soap in your wash bag, it makes no mess.

You only need to pick the right product, because „solid” does not automatically mean „mild”. Let us look at the difference.

Shower bar or soap?

Solid shower bar

Pressed from mild, skin-friendly surfactants, often skin-neutral pH and slightly re-fatting. Ideal for sensitive or dry skin.

Natural soap

Classically saponified, slightly alkaline, very pure and natural. Well tolerated by most, for very dry skin choose a superfatted variety.

Both clean plastic-free. Sensitive skin often fares a little gentler with the skin-neutral shower bar, purists reach for natural soap.

Lather in the hands
In a washcloth or sisal pouch the bar lathers especially well.

So your shower bar lasts longest

  • Lather in a washcloth or sisal pouch, it saves product and gently exfoliates.
  • Dry on a draining dish after showering, do not leave it standing in water.
  • For travel, put it in an airy tin with holes so it dries through.
  • Large bar to cut: better to use it in two halves, one stays dry.
Recommendation

Choosing a good shower bar

To suit your skin, a few points are worth checking:

  • Skin-neutral pH and mild, especially for sensitive skin
  • Short ingredient list, low fragrance if prone to irritation
  • Plastic-free packaging, ideally with a dish or pouch
