The short version
A safety razor with replaceable blades replaces disposable razors and plastic cartridges, a shaving soap with a brush replaces the foam can. The result is close and gentle, the blades are cheap and recyclable. What matters is little pressure and a flat angle.
The classic wet shave is rightly making a comeback. It is kind to skin and wallet and creates barely any waste: instead of whole plastic razors, only a thin metal blade goes into recycling. Add a nourishing shaving soap instead of canned foam. The start feels unfamiliar at first but is quickly learned.
The secret lies in a good lather and in the technique. We show you both.
How to · build the lather
Whip up the perfect shaving lather
You need
- A shaving soap in a bowl
- A shaving brush
- A little warm water
How to
Dip the brush briefly in warm water and squeeze lightly. Swirl it over the soap until it picks up lather. Then build it up further on your skin or in a bowl until a creamy, stable lather forms. Too dry? A few drops of water. Too wet? Pick up more soap.

The shave, step by step
Prepare the skin
Best after showering, when the skin is warm and the hairs soft. Apply the lather evenly.
Flat angle
Set the razor at a flat angle, about 30 degrees. Let the head do the work, do not press.
With the grain
First shave in the direction of growth, in short strokes. For more closeness, re-lather and go across.
Care
Rinse cold, pat dry carefully, apply a mild aftercare. Rinse and dry the razor.
The basic kit
Three pieces that last a lifetime. What to look for:
- A safety razor with a comfortable weight, for beginners rather a mild, closed comb
- A shaving soap with nourishing oils, low fragrance for sensitive skin
- A brush that holds water well and builds lather
