Treating a stain on fabric

Ox gall soap: the classic stain remover

Small, cheap, surprisingly strong. Why ox gall soap tackles almost any stain and how to use it right.

The short version

Ox gall soap combines soap with ox bile, whose bile acids dissolve grease and protein stains especially well. It is the specialist for the stubborn cases, while curd soap stays the all-rounder. Apply, let it act, wash as usual, done.

Some home remedies have been forgotten, and ox gall soap is unfairly one of them. This unassuming bar appears in countless grandmother’s tricks and is to this day one of the most effective tools against stains that other soaps cannot handle.

Its secret is in the name. A quick look and you will understand why it is so strong on grease and protein, and where another soap fits better.

What makes ox gall soap so effective

Ox gall soap is a soap to which ox bile is added. The bile acids it contains are naturally designed to break down fat and make it soluble. Ox gall soap uses exactly that: it attacks greasy and protein-based stains at their root, where ordinary surfactants often reach their limit. That is why it is so reliable on collar grime, grass, make-up and food residue. If you would rather avoid animal ingredients, there are now vegan versions on a purely plant base with similar performance.

What it works best against

Grease & food

Sauce, butter and oil stains: dab on, let it act, wash out cold. The signature discipline of ox gall soap.

Collar grime & sweat

Dampen the yellowed edge, rub in ox gall soap, wait briefly, then wash. Works on cuffs too.

Grass & make-up

Typical kids’ and everyday stains. Rub in, let it act, wash as usual. Test on a hidden spot first.

Fruit & coffee

Rinse cold first, then work over with ox gall soap. Soak dried-in stains beforehand.

Pre-treating a shirt stain
Dampen, rub in, let it act, then wash as usual, the proven four-step.

Step by step

1

Dampen

Dampen the stain with cold water. Soak dried-in stains briefly first.

2

Rub in

Rub ox gall soap directly onto the stain until a light lather forms. Sparing but targeted.

3

Let it act

Leave for a few minutes, stubborn stains longer. Do not let it dry in.

4

Wash

Wash as usual, cold to lukewarm where possible. Check before the dryer that the stain is really gone.

What to watch for

As gentle as it is, a few rules still apply:

  • With delicate fabrics like silk or wool, and with colour, always test on a hidden spot first.
  • Do not wash hot before the stain is out, or it sets.
  • Ox gall soap cleans, it is not care. For limescale you need an acid, see home remedies.
Recommendation

Choosing a good ox gall soap

As a bar or liquid with a brush head, both work. What to look for:

  • A high bile content, or a proven plant-based recipe if vegan
  • The bar is especially economical, the liquid especially targeted
  • Low fragrance if your skin is sensitive
