Clean grill grates , burnt-on fat off

A crusted grate after the barbecue? How to get the grill grate clean again , easiest while it is still warm.

The short version

The best time to clean the grate is while it is still warm: let it glow, brush it down with the grill brush, done. Soak stubborn crust overnight (warm water with dish soap or baking soda), then it almost comes off by itself.

Burnt-on fat and grill residue are not just unappetising, they burn again next time and give off bitter notes. Cleaning the grate right after grilling saves the scrubbing , the heat has already done half the work.

How the grate gets clean

1

Let it glow

After grilling, close the lid and let the grate glow at full heat for a few minutes, that chars the residue.

2

Brush while hot

Brush the still-warm grate with a grill brush, burnt-on residue comes off most easily now.

3

Soak stubborn bits

If crust still sticks, soak the grate overnight in warm water with dish soap or baking soda.

4

Scrub again

The next day work over it with a brush or the rough side of a sponge, the soaked crust comes off easily.

5

Dry & oil

Dry the grate and rub it thinly with oil, that protects against rust and food sticks less.

Safe instead of wire brush

Loose bristles from wire brushes can stick to the grate and end up in the food. Brushes without wire, a stainless steel coil or a wooden scraper are safer. Check the grate briefly before the next barbecue.
